Sleep apnea – doctor recommends having part of the soft palate removed – has any one had this done? Results?

My husband went to the Ear Nose and Throat doctor to discuss options to improve his quality of sleep and lessen his snoring. The doctor wants to perform a tonsillectomy, re-set his deviated septum, and surgically trim his soft palate. We’ve got a second opinion scheduled for next week, but my husband is understandably nervous. Has any one else had this procedure performed? Were the results what you had hoped for? Was recovery difficult?

Laser Surgery and Snoring

More than 700 million people from around the world are loud snorers. There is no 100% magic cure that can be used and individuals need to try different products on the market before eventually finding one that works in their case. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is also known as simply UPPP. This type of laser surgery to stop snoring is more expensive when compared with LAUP. Only one third of the patients that were treated with LAUP are considered a success because of this repetitive pattern.

Nasal Valve Dilators

The basic problem with nasal valve dilators is that they only help with the least common type of snoring, snoring due to clogged nasal passages. Of the two most common types of nasal valve dilators, the least expensive is an adhesive strip worn over the bridge of the nose while sleeping. The strips aren’t reusable and may fall off during sleep. Another problem is that the adhesive may cause skin irritation. They are not very effective, but they only cost about .80 cents per strip.

The other common type of nasal valve dilator is a flexible piece of plastic, the ends of which are inserted into the nostrils. This type of dilator is relatively uncomfortable and needs replacement several times a year, so they are not highly recommended. The cost is about $20.00 a pair.
