My two year old snores, is this a cause for concern?
My two year old is a heavy sleeper. She does not wake up throughout the night, but she snores very loudly. She has rather large tonsils like I did as a child. Could this be affecting her breathing. She also breathes with her mouth open, but only at night. It doesn’t wake her, and she doesn’t seem to bother her. I haven’t noticed anything else odd about it that would suggest sleep apnea. Ive sat and watched her for a good few hours before to see how she sleeps. Is this still cause for concern?
If she’s able to eat fine, and doesn’t get lots of tonsil infections, and you’ve observed her and she doesn’t have sleep apnea, I wouldn’t worry about it. My daughter had very enlarged tonsils and had to have them out. Here were her symptoms: LOUD snoring (you could hear it through 2 closed doors), apnea (she would stop breathing for about 10 seconds at a time, then startle herself awake many, many times a night), problems eating (she wasn’t even on the growth charts and gagged on her food), and HUGE behavioral problems during the day due to not sleeping well at night. Most children will grow into their tonsil size, according to our doctor, but our daughter had lots of other symptoms as well, so we had them removed, and 9 months later she has grown tremendously, doesn’t snore, and her behavior and ability to focus has improved greatly. So I guess in summary, I wouldn’t have them taken out just b/c she snores, but if you’re in doubt and she has other things going on, have her checked by an ENT. Hope this helps!

Is sleep apnea a real problem, or is the doctor trying to scam me?
My doctor, who’s new because I moved, referred me to a “sleep specialist” because I told him I snored heavily, am often tired during the day, and am overweight. The sleep specialist, after having me sleep with a bunch of wires strapped to me for a night, diagnosed me with “obstructive sleep apnea”, and is telling me I need a breathing machine for when I sleep at night as treatment. Also, he’s told me all sorts of stuff about health risks from the apnea: I’ll get to being fatigued to the point of narcolepsy, I’m at even more risk for an early heart attack, even though I’ve started going to the gym I won’t be able to lose weight, etc.
Now, what I want to know is, are there really health risks from sleep apnea, and is it a real problem, or is it just some sort of medical fad or scam?
My story mirrors your’s. I got the CPAP and started using it last year. I was underwhelmed when I did not see a perceivable change. After a few months I went on vacation and forgot the machine. Wow i felt it then I did not get any rest from sleeping and felt run down. After I got home and used the machine again I felt rested. Now occasionally I will take it off during the night or just forget to put it on. When I do that I feel as though I get no rest. I think overall it is a great benefit to my as well as to my wife that I don’t wake up with my snoring.
I think there are real health risks and the “bother” of wearing the machine is worth not having or decreasing the risk of some of the apnea health risks.
I have had chronic sinusitis for years and since using the CPAP I have found I am far less sensitive to sinus problems. I am not sure if it is the air pressure in my sinuses or not snoring. I have always wondered if the vibration from snoring caused some of my sinus problems. Overall I am healthier today than I was without the machine.
The medical scam I see is not about the benefits of the machine, it is in the leasing of the machine to the health insurance company. I priced the machine on eBay at about $700 all in. The company that owns my machine leases it to the insurance company for $189/mo. for the last year = $2268. I am not sure what to do about this issue, and I don’t want to deter you from getting the machine and using it.

Does your toddler snore?
My nearly 2 yr old snores pretty loudly. Is that common among toddlers? She is in no way overweight and not congested or anything. It is an everynight kind of thing.
She has always been a not so good sleeper. She cries in her sleep once/twice a night and actually wakes up and usually gets out of bed 2 – 4 times a night. I never really connected the two until recently.
Both of my children snore lightly. Their father snores like a freight train. I have been accused of snoring, but I have never confirmed it! In your case, if it seems to be getting worse, I would talk to the pediatrician (and probably an ent) about getting tonsils/adnoids removed

medical snoring remedies
July 3, 2011Help me stop snornig!?
What are some non-medical ways/methods/remedies I can try to stop snoring!? I do NOT have sleep apnea and I am a healthy person.
There are nose plasters, herbal “remedies” (cant vouch for them personally as I dont snore….I just breath heavily!). Try not to sleep on your back, the old wives remedy for that is to sew a potato in your pajama trousers!
The site below may be of more help than I have been …:D

snoring aids that work
June 28, 2011
Is there anything that actually works for snoring?
Does anybody know anyone that uses some sort of snoring aid? If so, does it work and what is it?
The secret is to just keep the mouth shut all night long! As soon as the mouth opens, it’s game over! Trust me, I use to be the worst when it came to snoring. Now i just sleep on my stomach and make sure my face is in a position that my jaw won’t open while I’m sleeping.

Why do men always seem to snore in bed, especially when you need your sleep the most?
I had to get out of bed and take some spare sheets down to the sofa to sleep last night, I shouldn’t be doing that in my own house!
