Dr. Donohue
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My sweetheart snores so loudly that it upsets both his and my sleep. How do you help someone with this terrible problem?—F.F. DEAR F.F.: Snoring results from the vibration of loose and redundant tissues at the back of the mouth and in the throat. It’s the same mechanism by which the reed of a wind instrument produces music, except that snoring isn’t music.

Sleep disorders common among professional drivers
( University of Gothenburg ) Sleep disorders are common among bus and tram drivers in Gothenburg: a quarter say that they have problems with daytime sleepiness, which could affect safety. Such are the results of a new study from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, presented at the annual Swedish Sleep Medicine Congress in Gothenburg on April 21-23.

snoring mask
So white noise machines work at masking unwanted noise?

- but can your neighbours still hear it? I have recently bought a Marpac 980 sound conditioner to mask uncontrollable noise from next door (and my partner snoring) and was wondering if the neighbours would still be able to hear it. It works at filling the room with white noise and is very noticeable (i am still getting used to it) and though it has the desired effect in blocking out other noise i am wondering if the neighbours could hear it. I don’t know what the frequency of this device is but if someone could explain how this works, it would be really appreciated. Thanks Ex

The sound that you hear belongs in a certain frequency range. Going from low pitched sound to high pitched sounds.

White noise generators fill the gaps in that frequency range therefore masking the disturbing sounds. So, basically it makes all sounds sound more alike and more indistinguishable from the noise generator by adding sound.

As for neighbors hearing it, if it is on loud enough, sure. But, i doubt it really goes that loud.

Trying to get Joe to go to bed and put his CPAP mask on – he swears he isn’t asleep and snoring each time I awaken him
