dog wheezing snoring

Is something wrong with my dog?

I have a puppy named Mara that is a cross between a Jack Russell Terrior and a Chihuahua. She is several months old and fixed, and seems to be in very good health.

Often when Mara falls asleep, she will begin to make weird noises, the best way I can describe them is snorts. This is not your typical snoring. It is a lone snort that is very loud and deep, as though coming from a german shepard who can’t breathe.

Also, sometimes when Mara is awake, she will begins making these horrible loud wheezing noises, over and over again rapidly. They are very loud and her whole body shakes as though she is a bucking bronco. Afterward Mara will seem perfectly normal, like nothing happened. There is no particular time she does this, it happens at random.

Is this normal behavior? Or is something wrong with my dog?

I understand, you sound like my Mom. Her Schipperke is doing the exact same thing.
I have tried to explain to her that dogs want to breathe through their noses, never their mouths. When the nose clogs, they panic and must clear it, via snorting.
Many of the noises she makes while asleep could be dreaming. Some dogs are noisy and violent dreamers.
Tell you vet when you see him again
