snoring while exhaling

Sleep disturbances caused by extremely unusual breathing patterns…Not sleep apnea, what is it???

My boyfriend and I have been living together for quite a while now and although he snores sometimes (which is obviously normal), he makes these weird noises sometimes and it worries me to the point of waking him up just to get him to breathe normally.

The only way to describe what it sounds like is this…he sounds like he holds his breath (not just stops breathing like in sleep apnea but literally takes a breath and holds it) and then when he exhales, he does so with his throat half closed, making the sound of someone with asthma gasping for air but he’s exhaling, and when he breathes back in after that his throat is open so I know it’s just the position of his throat and not asthma or any kind of blockage.

What on earth is this?? I’ve told him about it recently and he said that he’s been told that he does it, several times.

He has horrible nightmares to this day (he’s 35) and has all his life. Could this be the reason??? Please help, it worries me almost every night..

he probably lacks exercise. i think teaching him exercises would help.
