snoring dog cure
My Dog goes mad when someone knocks on the door.?
My dog goes mad when someone knocks on the door and am wondering if anyone knows to break her from the habit. She gets walked regularly and is pretty well behaved, not lassie material. When in this mode she will not listen and takes a bit to go back to normal (asleep snoring). I believe this is fear related. She used to bark at people walking by but we managed to cure that trait. The only reason we cant cure this is because she does not listen or respond to voice commands when she is in this state. She eats a dry food mix with gravy as she is very sensitive to colourings etc.
Picking her up is a no go she weighs 60kgs will have to try the ratlle but as i have said before she really goes to the zone in this case, might try a water gun? The barking at passers by was just a bit of training and you knew it could be done but knocking/doorbells or postman and its going to take a miracle. I prefer the floor vibrating snoreing to the mayhem of the postman
You need to do some positive reinforcement training! One of the first things is to arrange some time so you can do some positive ‘flooding’, that is you get a ‘dog friendly’ friend to knock on the dog, (once, not continual knocking) while you are sitting in the room with your dog, totally ignore the knock, don’t react in any way, no looking, talking or touching her after trying this several time you should find (if you are doing it right) that she will bark, stop and then look at you, then you can calmly praise her, put her on a lead and then open the door to your friend, who must not fuss her, look at her or talk to her if she tries to jump up or bark, but your friend can calmly give a treat if she sits quietly. You may need to do this lots of times as some dogs are quicker than others and some owners are more consistent trainers than others.
The postman: In your dogs head ” some person has tried to break into her mums house, she has been very brave, very noisy and frightened them away, she knows that they nearly broke in because she can smell them”(on the letters) trouble is they keep coming back everyday, so she now has made a job for herself in protecting her mum and the home.
The reason your dog doesn’t listen is because she is frightened and has gone into reactive animal, she is no longer your ‘what ever her name is’ so you are wasting your time shouting at her.Rattles and water guns??? is that the way to retrain a frightened dog who is trying her best to protect you? Good job dogs are so forgiving of negative training methods!
