sleeping through snoring

sleeping through snoring
Sleeping troubles… what is wrong with me?

I am 12 years old and I have always had sleeping problems.
I can never sleep at night time. I just can’t. Even if I am tired I stay up.
Then I sleep all day.
I have slept many times in class without even knowing it.
The teacher has had to wake me up.
Well I went 2 days with only 7 hours of sleep recently and I had to be sent home because I was shaking felt realy dizzy.
Well for the past few days I have been sleeping all day. (School is canceled.)
My mom is starting to get worried because I am always sleeping through out the whole day.
I have really weird sleeping patterns.
Sometimes I get no sleep and sometimes I will sleep for 15 hours a day.
I also have big tonsils. I think that has to do with this one sleep thing.
The doctors always say my tonsils are too big.
I also snore in my sleep. (If that helps.)
Please help me out!
Thanks!

Snoring and enlarged tonsils are both symptoms of sleep apnea. Like other answers, I suggest you see a sleep specialist about this problem. There are sleep laboratories where doctors can diagnose your sleep issues. Unfortunately, many insurance companies will not pay for sleep labs unless it is absolutely necessary.

Although it is pretty technical, you can look at the following link and sleep apnea. It mentions big tonsils as one symptom of sleep apnea. http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/respire/apnea.html

Although it will not cure sleep apnea, here are some ideas that might help you to sleep better.

I know it may be difficult for you, but try to establish a regular sleep routine. In other words, try to go to sleep at the same time each night and get up at the same time in the morning.

Below is a long list I once wrote about ways to fall asleep. The list is so long that reading it might put you to sleep :-)

What helped me a lot to fall asleep, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. The combination of voice and music is very soothing. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices.

A warm bath is a great way to help you to sleep (depending on the season). If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.

A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., until your whole body is relaxed.

Of course, guided relaxation methods can help. As vividly as possible, imagine yourself at the beach, in the mountains or country, or whatever is most soothing to you. I hope this helps a little.
